Johns Hopkins University Assistant Professor - Preparing and Responding to Emerging Pandemics in Baltimore, Maryland

Overview

In 2013, Michael R. Bloomberg made a visionary gift establishing 50 Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships at Johns Hopkins University . It was a call to transform Johns Hopkins ' research mission for the 21st Century. In 2020, Mr. Bloomberg gave another gift to recruit an additional 5 0 Bloomberg Distinguished Professors (BDPs) .

The majority of these new BDPs will be recruited alongside 3 9 new junior faculty members into faculty-developed interdisciplinary research clusters. Clusters will create critical mass to conduct transformational research in crucial fields. They offer unparalleled levels of administrative and grants support, and access to equipment and core research facilities. Post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, and support staff will also be recruited within each cluster to ensure its success.

About the BDP Program

The Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships Program serve s as the cornerstone of an ambitious institution-wide effort to incite and conduct world-class interdisciplinary research, teach the next generation of scholars, and collaborate across the divisional strengths of Johns Hopkins to solve critical challenges. Junior faculty positions are recruited within a single department; however, joint or courtesy positions are also possible.

Description

The Department of Epidemiology in the Bloomberg School of Public Health is recruiting Assistant Professor for the Preparing and Responding to Emerging Pandemics (PREP) cluster , with expertise in infectious disease dynamics (including modeling, phylogenetics/ phylo dynamics , and immun o -epidemiology ) .

The candidate we expect to appoint to this tenur e-track position will have the following characteristics:

  • Experience and evidence of productivity in using theoretical and computational approaches to understand the epidemiology and ecology of infectious diseases

  • Willingness and excitement to work with and contribute to a group using analytical, field, laboratory and trial methods to explore scientifically interest in and policy-relevant issues in emerging infectious diseases

    Specifically, we are seeking individuals who have training and extensive experience in one or more than one of the following areas:

  • A d octorate in epidemiology, ecology, virology, microbiology, immunology, engineering or equivalent training

  • Experience in st atistical analysis of pathogen transmission, mathematical and computational modeling, phylodynamic methods and/or immunodynamics models .

    The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching courses in infectious disease epidemiol ogy and dynamics. Candidates who combine methodological and modeling work with experience in field epidemiology and data collection are particularly encouraged to apply. While the position does not require a disease-specific focus, candidates with research interests in emerging and re-emerging infections are encouraged to apply.

    Preparing and Responding to Emerging Pandemics (PREP)

    The vision of the PREP cluster is to address key gaps in our existing tools and understanding at each stage of the pandemic response from preparedness activities for potential threats and early detection of emerging infections to control and eventual disease elimination.

    As a core member of the PREP cluster, you would have a pivotal role in ensuring that when the next outbreak occurs, JHU will be positioned to rapidly leverage existing tools, expertise , and relationships to guide evolving scientific inquiry and policy decisions.?
