Johns Hopkins University Adjunct Guitar Teacher in Baltimore, Maryland

Position Summary:

The Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD), is pleased to announce an adjunct teaching position (or positions) in the Guitar Department commencing July 1, 2024. Candidates should be experienced in teaching classical guitar students of all ages and levels (beginner to advanced) in both individual and group settings, as well as teaching both traditional and Suzuki repertoire. Opportunities for teaching are currently available at the Peabody Preparatory's Frederick and Annapolis campuses.

The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and dedicated guitar faculty as part of a vibrant and growing department committed to helping all students achieve their potential. We embrace the novice musician as well as the serious student aspiring toward a career in music. Ideal candidates should be experienced in teaching classical guitar to students of all ages and levels and comfortable with both in-person and online modalities.

Duties:

  • Teach classical guitar lessons to beginner and advanced students of all ages, following the Pre-Twinkle guitar curriculum for beginners ages 4 - 8; teach Suzuki group classes, leveled ensemble classes, and adult beginner classes as needed.

  • Participate in annual professional development as needed.

  • Assist with end-of-semester performances, attend faculty meetings, substitute teach as needed.

  • Assist with Fret Fest, the annual guitar festival held early March at the downtown Peabody campus.

  • Bachelor's degree in music and/or music education required. A master's degree or equivalent experience and training is preferred.

  • Experience as a classical guitar instructor to advanced, intermediate, and beginner students of all ages.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Experience teaching group classes and/or directing ensembles preferred.

  • Suzuki training preferred, familiarity with the method and philosophy required.

  • Some familiarity with popular styles of guitar is welcome but not required.
