St. Luke's University Health Network Registered Nurse, Pre Admission Testing, (Full Time Days) in Allentown, Pennsylvania

JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse is responsible for coordinating and providing individualized quality patient care based on the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Pre-Admission Registered Nurse works under the Surgical Optimization Department and is responsible for facilitating communication between offices, surgeons, and the anesthesia team. Patient assessments are completed via telephone. The Registered Nurse is responsible for patient education and preparation prior to surgery, including review of lab work and EKG’s.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs in-depth, systematic assessment of all surgical patients by chart review. Initiates patient teaching regarding surgery and/or procedures. Formulates collaborates plan of care and identifies expected patient outcomes.

  • Organizes, coordinates and prioritizes patient care utilizing available resources. Completes a thorough chart review and documents pertinent medical history, medication reconciliation, database assessment, and risk and triage when appropriate.

  • Ensures that appropriate testing and clearances are obtained prior to surgery and communicates with the Surgical Optimization physician or NP regarding patient concerns.

  • Enters labs and testing as appropriate. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treatment.

  • Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).

  • Complies with established chain of command for work related problems.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handles within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information. Participates in identifying department needs and support department goals and objectives that contribute to the growth of surgical services product line.

  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding safety, attendance and dress code. Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.

  • Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to coworkers. Takes active role in department based quality programs. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/process, and Safety. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices

OTHER FUNCTIONS: Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 6 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 2 hours per day; 1 hours at a time. Walk 1hour per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, push and carry objects up to 10 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair. Frequently stoop and bend. Occasionally reach above shoulder level. Occasional use of hands/fingers for data entry. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to normal vision. Speaking as it relates to normal conversation.

COMMUNICATIONS: Must be able to communicate with other departments, patients, families, the community, and the medical staff.

EDUCATION:

Current RN license in the State of New Jersey or Pennsylvania based on work location; dual licensure required within 1 year of hire. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of Acute Care (medical/surgical) nursing preferred.

Basic knowledge of EKG’s.

Basic computer skills necessary.
